Welcome

This is 1M1 Records' first newsletter, officially launching the 1M1 Records website. 1M1 Records has specialised in Australian Film Soundtracks for over a decade now, and continues to release more Australian Soundtracks on CD with a new CD release every month.

In these monthly newsletters 1M1 will keep people informed of what is happening in Australian music scoring for feature films, documentaries, miniseries and telemovies plus details of 1M1's current releases and future releases. Included also, will be information regarding Australian film composers and their current assignments, and Australian film award ceremonies. 1M1 also plans to make available other non-1M1 Australian film scores like "Brides of Christ" (Mario Millo).

To celebrate the launch of our website 1M1 Records is releasing two new soundtracks this month, "The Missing" (composed by Bruce Smeaton) and "The Pickwick Papers" (composed by Simon Walker).

"The Missing" features a large orchestral score for a film about a Vatican priest returning to Australia to look for his missing daughter. This story mixes in with a detective story investigating a serial killer. The priest is taken into the outback of Australia, lost in the middle of nowhere, and comes across a tribal Aborigine with whom he develops an interesting relationship. As Bruce Smeaton writes, it's "a brave attempt to fuse a clash-of-two-cultures film with a road movie and a thriller."

"The Pickwick Papers" is quite different stylistically, Simon Walker's symphonic orchestral score capturing the feel of mid-19th Century pre-Victorian London, as satirically observed by Charles Dickens in his novel.

Other new releases will be announced over the next few months in subsequent newsletters.

More Soundtracks; previously released titles which are still available, including titles previously released by 1M1 Records which are no longer being manufactured, and brand new CDs of other soundtracks which 1M1 has in its stocks, like "The Lighthorsemen" and "Second Time Lucky", and a range of other scores. There are brand new copies of Jerry Goldsmith's scores for "Planet of the Apes", "Night Crossing", "Rio Conchos" and "Islands in the Stream", and scores by Bruce Broughton, Michael Kamen, Hans Zimmer, Georges Delerue and Pino Donaggio, as well as a special CD of John Scott conducting suites of music from favourite film scores of his own. There are also CDs ranging from famous big sellers like James Horner's score for "Titanic" to the brilliant double CD of film themes by Ennio Morricone written between 1966 and 1987.

Collectors Items; rare 1M1 CDs priced in the premium range because of the difficulty in sourcing them, containing 1M1 CDs like "Roadgames / Patrick", "Race for the Yankee Zephyr" and "Harlequin": items which have very few soundtracks left in stock and are quite unlikely to become available again in the forseeable future.

Secondhand Titles; soundtrack releases from anywhere in the world which 1M1 currently has in stock, containing quite a few bargain-priced excellent condition soundtrack CDs for sale. Some of these are soundtracks for Australian films like "Babe" (Nigel Westlake) and "Metal Skin" (John Clifford White), but there are many others. If you missed out on John Williams' score for "The Patriot" or Bruce Broughton's "Lost in Space", those are available here, as well as a variety of other scores by Hans Zimmer ("Muppet Treasure Island"), Howard Shore ("The Fly" and "The Cell"), James Newton Howard ("Unbreakable"), Alan Silvestri (10 tracks from "Father of the Bride Part II") and James Horner ("Enemy at the Gates"). Additionally, more titles will be added to this secondhand section as the page is further compiled and updated each month. There is only one copy of many of these titles, however, so not all orders will be able to be filled immediately.

"Roxanne and other Film and Television themes by Bruce Smeaton"

Although "Roxanne and other Film and Television themes by Bruce Smeaton" has been available previously locally, "The Pickwick Papers", composed for an animated adaptation of Charles Dickens' famous novel, and Bruce Smeaton's symphonic orchestral score for "The Missing" are being released for the first time.

"Annie's Coming Out" (USA: "A Test of Love") and "The Last of the Mohicans" are scheduled for release later in the year, as well as Nigel Westlake's impressive orchestral score for the documentary on the history of the Australian film industry, "Celluloid Heroes". Other Bruce Smeaton scores are also slated for released over the next several months.

Recent scoring assignments

Mario Millo has scored the mini-series "Changi", which has just been broadcast in Australia, and has recently completed scoring "Heroes' Mountain", a film of the tragic landslide at Australia's most famous ski resorts in Thredbo, and the rescue of Stuart Diver, trapped underneath the mountain of debris.

In 2001, Christopher Gordon scored "When Good Ghouls Go Bad" for U.S. television (released on CD by Varese Sarabande), airing at Halloween, directed by Patrick Read Johnson ("Baby's Day Out"). In addition, he has also scored a documentary called "Much Ado About Something"; and conducted and orchestrated Roger Mason's score for the film "Horses". He has also written a concert work, "Peace on Earth", for Gondwana voices, The Sydney Children's Choir and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Lyn Williams, which premiered in Australia on 7th December last year.

In the last year or so several notable scores have also been produced, including "Lantana" (Paul Kelly), "La Spagnola" (Cezary Skubiszewski), "The Bank" (Alan John) and "The Dish" (Edmund Choi), all of which have had soundtrack releases on CD.

Latest News & Awards

1. The Australian Film Industry (AFI) Awards, Australia's equivalent to the Oscars, were presented a few months ago, and four scores received AFI nominations for Best Original Music Score for a Feature Film: "Lantana" (Paul Kelly), "La Spagnola" (Cezary Skubiszewski), "The Bank" (Alan John) and "The Dish" (Edmund Choi). The award went to Cezary Skubiszewski for "La Spagnola".

- In other areas, the AFI Award for Open Craft Award in a Non-Feature Film went to Mairead Hannan, Kev Carmody and Paul Kelly for "One Night The Moon" for Original Score (Short Fiction).

- In the AFI Award for Open Craft Award in a Television Drama category, although Peter Best ("The Leaving of Liverpool") was nominated for Original Score for "My Husband, My Killer", the award went to Shawn Seet for the editing of the television drama, "Do or Die".

- Amongst the other Feature Film award categories, "Lantana" scooped the ceremony with 7 awards, for Best Film, Best Director (Ray Lawrence), Best Actor (Anthony LaPaglia), Best Actress (Kerry Armstrong), Best Adapted Screenplay (Andrew Bovell), Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Vince Colosimo) and Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Rachael Blake). "Moulin Rouge" picked up 5 awards, for Best Sound , Best Editing, Best Costume Design, Best Production Design and Best Cinematography.

2. Earlier in the year, the Australia composers' own 2001 Guild awards were given for the previous year. The awards were given in the following categories.

- The FFC Award for Best Music for a Feature Film "Better Than Sex" (David Hirschfelder)

- The APRA Award for Best Soundtrack Album The Roland Award for Best Music for a Mini-Series or Telemovie Best Title Theme for a TV Series, Serial or Mini-Series "On the Beach" (Christopher Gordon)

- The ZOMBA MUSIC Award for Best Music for a TV Series or Serial "The Lost World" (Garry McDonald and Laurie Stone)

- Award for Best Music for a Children's TV Series "Thunderstone" [Series 3] (Garry McDonald and Laurie Stone)

- FTO Award for Best Music for a Documentary "Uncle Chatzkel" (Guy Gross)

- The MAGNET Award for Best Music for an Advertisement "The Fly" (Guy Gross)

- The SONY Award for Best Music for a Short Film "Confessions of a Headhunter" (Roger Mason)

- The HARBOUR MUSIC Award for Best Song Composed for a Feature Film, Telemovie, TV Series or Mini-Series "The New Adventures of Ocean Girl" (Keith Moore)
